Thank you so much to Lizzy and Emily who joined me yesterday evening to discuss Sula by Toni Morrison. Unfortunately this conversation was rescheduled and cut short because of the very needed anti-fascist demonstrations all over the UK which myself, friends and family were attending. I am very grateful for how understanding everyone has been and it meant a lot to be able to do both book club and attend a counter-rally where the far-right were completely outnumbered.
Therefore, because of how concise this book club discussion had to be I want to ask you all to share some thoughts on Sula here. And as promised these are the articles I had read alongside of Sula.
Towards a Black Feminist Criticism by Barbara Smith
Unspeakable Things Unspoken: The Afro-American Experience in American Literature by Toni Morrison
A Dew-Lined Web: On Sula by Namwali Serpell
Some questions Sula posed for me; what does the novel say about the significance of girlhood, what does it mean that Sula died so young, why did it take so long for Nel to grieve Sula? Also, what did everyone else make about the end in which Shadrack unwittingly led so many characters to their deaths?
